The electrical hookup is the one part of a hot tub install we do not do, and the one buyers forget to budget for. Here is what Hamilton electricians charge, what pushes the number up, and how to skip it with a plug-and-play tub.

A 240V hot tub needs its own GFCI circuit from your panel to a disconnect box near the tub. A licensed electrician runs it and files the ESA permit. The price depends almost entirely on distance and digging.
| Situation | Typical Hamilton quote |
|---|---|
| Short run, panel near the tub, no trenching | $400 to $800 |
| Long run, trenching or conduit, or panel work needed | $1,500 to $3,000 |
| ESA permit and inspection (filed by the electrician) | $130 to $180 |
| 120V plug-and-play tub into an existing outdoor GFCI outlet | $0 electrical |
Ranges are what Hamilton-area customers have reported to us and what we publish on our installation page. Your electrician's written quote is the only number that counts.
Everything after that, placement, levelling, fill, commissioning and showing you the controls, is our installation service.
Tip: pick the tub location with the panel in mind. Ten metres closer to the house can be the difference between the bottom and the middle of the range.
A plug-and-play tub runs on a standard 120V, 15 amp outdoor GFCI outlet. No new circuit, no permit, no electrician. If you already have an outdoor outlet near the spot, the electrical cost is zero.
The trade-off is heat recovery. A 120V heater is smaller, so after a long soak in January the tub takes longer to come back to temperature, and the pump and heater cannot always run at the same time. For a couple or a small family who keeps the cover on, it works. For a big tub used every night in winter, 240V is the right call.

For a dedicated 240V GFCI circuit, Hamilton quotes commonly land in the $400 to $800 range for a short, simple run from the panel, and climb to $1,500 to $3,000 when the panel is far from the tub, the run needs trenching or conduit, or the panel itself needs work. Add the ESA permit, typically $130 to $180. Get two written quotes from licensed electrical contractors; the spec sheet for your tub tells them the circuit size.
Yes. Any new 240V circuit in Ontario needs an Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) permit and inspection. Your electrician files it and includes the fee in the quote. A tub wired without one is a problem for insurance and for resale.
Most 240V hot tubs need a dedicated 40, 50 or 60 amp GFCI breaker. The exact size is on the product page and the manufacturer spec sheet. Larger tubs with two pumps and a 5.5 kW heater sit at the 60 amp end.
Yes, with a 120V plug-and-play tub. It plugs into a standard outdoor GFCI outlet, so there is no new circuit and no permit. The trade-off is a smaller heater that recovers temperature more slowly in a Hamilton winter. DreamMaker and the Maple Spas M421 are the plug-and-play models on our floor.
No. Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor. We handle everything else: delivery, placement, water fill, commissioning and Spa School. We give you the electrical spec sheet in advance and can refer an electrician who has wired our tubs before.
Before. The electrician runs the circuit to a disconnect box within sight of the tub location. On delivery day we place the tub and your electrician (or you, for plug-and-play) makes the final connection. A tub sitting empty for weeks waiting on wiring is the most common delay we see.
The Ontario Electrical Safety Code sets a minimum distance from the tub to the disconnect and to any outlet; your electrician applies it. The practical answer is that every extra metre of run adds cable and labour, so the closer the tub is to the panel, the cheaper the quote.
Tell us which tub you are looking at and we send the electrical spec sheet and an electrician referral the same day.
